From a young age I was interested in helping people and the environment. While attending Middlebury College, I volunteered as an EMT and firefighter. People have always come to me in a crisis for help, luckily I thrive under pressure.
A rising senior at Middlebury College studying Neuroscience / Pre Med, I had a goal to be an ER Medical Director & Doctor. That all changed at 2 pm on a sunny Monday afternoon when a car crossed left of center, hitting the ambulance I was driving head-on. Our combined speeds were 120 miles per hour, leaving me face-to-face with a dirt bank, white smoke - and a whole new reality. When I turned to help those in the back, I couldn’t move. My pelvis, it turned out, was crushed. My liver was lacerated and my left foot was shattered. The patient and EMTs in the back, I would learn, had suffered broken backs, punctured lungs and brain injuries and I was life flighted to the nearest hospital. The driver of the other car had been declared dead at the scene. I was told I may never walk again. Many surgeries later (including two involving a metal plate inserted into my pelvis with six screws), a lengthy stint in a wheelchair, crutches & lot's of PT, my views on the glamours of doctor life changed.
With my view on a career path changed, I went looking for an alternative. I landed a great role as a Staff Scientist at an environmental firm. Working my way up to Project Manager, Operations Manager & eventually a General Manager of the largest Hazwaste Firms in New England. Still saving the environment, I am a President of Green Lantern Solar.
